Never Going to Let Me Down
"You're never going let, you're never going to let me down. You're never going to let, never going to let me down. Never going to let, never going let me down...."
These lyrics are from a beautiful song called, "King of My Heart" by Bethel Music. Have you heard the song? It's a catchy one to sing. At least, in my opinion. However, if you're similar to me, you've heard that chorus, or sang it, and analyzed that statement. It's a pretty big statement. - God has never let me down.- Let that sink in for a moment. Do you actually believe that?
I was lying in my bed late at night. The house had no air conditioning, the air was humid as ever. The windows open and my babies asleep. Jeff was out of town for work and it was just me in the dark quiet of the night. In the kitchen, this song played from my computer's speakers. "God, this song..." I analyzed it. Then an image came to mind giving me a clear picture of this song in a practical sense....
The vision was of the children and I shopping at our local grocery store. I continued shopping while Shirley slipped a candy bar into the cart. Fully expecting that it was now hers. However, upon checkout it was not purchased. She was devastated. Upset and angry at me. Yet, I never promised her this bar. As a mom I LOVE to give her good gifts. In fact, I'm not sure if anything else brings me greater joy than to shower my children with gifts. Sometimes though, the answer is just "not right now." Or, "no." Or even, "you're not ready for that type of candy bar."
How often do we create expectations in our relationship with God? Did you know unmet expectations is the number one relationship killer? It's always a series of unmet expectations that lead to a relationship dying.
So, the reality is that the Lord is specifically not letting us down, but our expectations of what's to happen being let down.
