If Nursing Home Walls Could Talk

“Sister?! My back hurts.” Miss Thelma in her mid eighties informed me. My heart breaks; of course her back hurts! She’s either sitting in a wheel chair or lying in bed. Silently praying for my faith to grow, I ask Miss Thelma if we can pray together for healing. “Dear Lord, I believe you love Thelma so very much and want nothing more than for her to be healed…” I begin. “Hey sister?” she interrupts.

“Yes, miss Thelma?”

“My hip hurts too.”

“Then let’s pray for your hip too.” After praying she thanks me and we go on a “walk” together through the hallways greeting people as we pass. I wish you could meet Thelma. She quickly becomes the favorite of every team I bring in. She has this way about her that screams, “I’m cool, come talk to me.” But most of all, she’s famous for one particular song…

“Miss Thelma, do you like to sing?” I love to ask, knowing the response I’m going to get.

Then with a thoughtful pause she loudly and enthusiastically begins, “Hey, hey good lookin’! Whatchya got cookin’?! How about cooking something up with me?! I got a hot rod and a two dollar bill and I know a spot right over the hill where the soda pop and the drinks are free. So if you want to have fun, come along with ME ME ME!!!” she sings. Then we laugh and repeat the process throughout the hallways.
